SAN, NAS or Both Simultaneously?

Run a NAS & SAN Simultaneously with TrueCluster Scale's SN1000, SN2000 an?d SN4000 storage systems are highly flexible storage clusters, allowing you to run SAN & NAS simultaneously from the same storage pool, using a variety of protocols including iSCSI, NFS, and SAMBA/CIFS.

NAS

NAS Benefits Network attached storage (NAS) has provided simplicity, manageability and relatively easy data access. The one thing they’ve lacked, however, was scalability. Typical NAS typologies are centered on array storage systems that constrain scalability to the original form factor purchased.

SAN

SAN Benefits Scale’s TrueCluster architecture also can be deployed as “clustered” SAN. A cSAN is like a traditional unclustered SAN in that it provides a shared storage pool on your network. The key difference, however, is that the cSAN is made up of a number of autonomous units that, utilizing storage virtualization technologies, combine together to form a single storage pool, greatly simplifying administration of the system. Data is mirrored and striped across all units, providing for a safe and redundant data store. This creates an environment that scales both capacity performance as the size of the cluster grows. A cSAN provides scalability and data safety in an environment that is substantially less expensive and easier to use than traditional unclustered SAN architectures.

Traditional SAN and NAS implementations possess many problems in today’s fast growing storage environment:

  • "Fork lift upgrades." When additional storage is necessary beyond what the original form can maintain, the entire array must be repurposed.

  • Data migration. When the array is repurposed, data must be migrated onto the new array. This takes time and could cause service interruptions.

  • Buy More than Needed. Without finegrain scalability, storage has to be purchased far in advance of when it actually is needed.

TrueCluster for the NAS Scale’s TrueCluster architecture creates a "clustered" NAS environment that allows for the easy, migrationless scalability of storage. In addition, storage can be purchased 1TB at a time, beginning with an initial purchase as low as 3TB.

TrueCluster for the SAN Key benefits of a Scale cSAN include scalability and data safety in an environment that is substantially less expensive and easy to use than traditional unclustered SAN architectures.
